Where is Obama’s Appeal to Socially Conservative Youth?

I don’t buy it.

As a young social conservative, I find it very hard to believe that youth with similar values to mine will be voting for Obama when he has a record of supporting abortion in all forms.

Obama sometimes speaks as if he is a moderate on pro-choice issue. However, he is not. His actions and votes tell a different story.

The Illinois Born Alive Infant Protection Act, introduced every year from 2001-2003 would have provided medical care for infants who were the victims of botched abortions.

Dr. Idar Rommen, a family practitioner in Snohomish, Washington, explains the ethics behind the procedure. He said, “Once the fetus has reached the stage of viability and is outside the mother’s body, most American doctors would consider denying medical care to this baby morally unjustifiable.”

Even NARAL, the pro-choice advocacy group that recently endorsed Obama, remained neutral on this legislation that would have protected babies who survived late-term abortions.

Obama voted against it, but he didn’t stop there. He spoke against the measure from the Senate floor on multiple occasions.

Also, his wife Michelle distributed campaign literature in 2004 in which she called partial-birth abortion "a legitimate medical procedure," and asked Obama supporters to pay $150 to attend a luncheon for her husband, who would fight against "a cynical ploy" to stop it.

Lastly, he received a 100% pro-choice rating from NARAL in 2005, 2006, and 2007. And during his term in the State Senate, he worked with Planned Parenthood to further abortion legislation in Illinois.

Multiple studies have shown that youth of all political persuasions are more pro-life than their parents.

The Seattle Times article was correct in stating that social conservative youth are broadening their scope of issues. We are deeply concerned about global poverty, homelessness, the environment, the war in Darfur, and the continuance of family values in an increasingly anti-family society.

Single issue voting is less and less pervasive in my generation. But my advice to young voters who plan to vote for Obama is to examine his record. Obama gives inspiring speeches, but his past actions speak louder than words.

As a social conservative, I will be voting for John McCain this fall because we know where he stands.

has been termed as “hard charging”, adding more to the mix that could prove
volatile if Obama’s unable to manage them with a cool head and
firm hand. Like a payday loan, it takes a bite from a budget
battle, and Obama is poised to get a lot of wisdom from this
group. He may look to build on the Democratic Party’s recent gains, but to do
